The Martin SPD-16M dreadnought acoustic guitar, part of the “16” series, merges modern guitar specifications with the renowned Martin quality and sound. The “SP” designation signifies special edition features typically found only on Martin’s premium models. These include a AAA Spruce top with ageing finish toner, full body gloss finish, full tortoise body binding and pick guard, gold hardware, D-45 abalone pearl rosette, and abalone snowflake/slotted diamond/cat’s eyes fingerboard and bridge inlays, along with a D-45 style back stripe inlay.
Introduced in 1996, the SPD-16M incorporated new technology like the Hybrid X-bracing pattern and the mortise and tenon neck joint, features that distinguish it from earlier 16 series guitars.
The SPD-16M showcases solid woods throughout and high-end cosmetics typically reserved for premium models, making it an exceptional American-made acoustic guitar. Its body dimensions are akin to most dreadnoughts, featuring a 14/20-fret fingerboard, a 25.4” scale, and a fingerboard width of 1 11/16” at the nut and 2 1/8” at the 12th fret.
The combination of the Martin mortise/tenon neck joint and scalloped spruce hybrid X-bracing with the strength of the maple back and sides allows for thinner, more responsive tonewoods, resulting in the rich, bright sound characteristic of the D-16. The modified low-profile neck is both fast and comfortable, making this guitar difficult to put down once you start playing.
This Martin is in great nick for a 22-year-old guitar. It has been well looked after as it shows near zero marks, dents or scuffs on the body, top, neck and headstock. The flame Maple back and sides are a highlight of this guitar giving off a stunning aesthetic pairing with the darkened-aged Spruce top.
